- Colorfastness is generally excellent, especially to washing, making reactive dyes the standard choice for cotton apparel, bedding, and towels.

Disperse Dyes
Polyester & other synthetic fibers
Disperse dyes aren’t water-soluble in the traditional sense — they’re applied as a fine dispersion and, under heat and pressure, diffuse into the polyester fiber itself, becoming part of the plastic-like polymer structure.
- The only dye class that works properly on polyester — any polyester or poly-blend garment you’re sourcing was almost certainly dyed with disperse dyes.
- Colorfastness is typically very good once fixed, but sublimation can be an issue: high heat can cause disperse dyes to migrate and stain adjacent light-colored fabrics. Worth testing in activewear or tightly packed garments.
- Dyeing temperature matters — polyester needs high-temperature dyeing (often 130°C) or a carrier chemical at lower temperatures. Ask which method your supplier uses.
- Poly-cotton blends typically require a two-stage dyeing process — disperse for the polyester, reactive or another class for the cotton — a common source of shade mismatch between fiber types.
Vat Dyes

Vat dyes are chemically reduced into a soluble, colorless form to penetrate the fiber, then oxidized to convert back into an insoluble pigment locked inside the fiber. Indigo — the classic denim dye — is a vat dye, though most modern denim uses a simplified surface-dyeing version rather than full vat dyeing.
- Outstanding colorfastness to washing and light — the main reason vat dyes are chosen for workwear, uniforms, and other heavy-duty textiles that face repeated industrial laundering.
- The process is more complex and costly than reactive dyeing, involving careful reduction and oxidation steps — generally making vat-dyed fabric more expensive to produce.
- Limited color range — vat dyes excel in deep, rich, classic colors (navy, black, khaki) rather than neons or pastels.
- True vat-dyed indigo denim behaves differently from surface-dyed denim — it penetrates less deeply into the yarn core, which creates the fading and contrast prized in raw or selvedge denim. Ask specifically about dyeing method if that story matters to your buyers.
