What Is a Lab Dip?
A lab dip is a small, precisely dyed fabric swatch produced to match a target color — usually a Pantone reference, a physical swatch, or an approved previous production sample. It’s a controlled trial run before a single meter of bulk fabric is committed to a shade.
How the Process Works
Target Analysis
The target color is measured with a spectrophotometer, which reads its exact spectral values rather than relying on the human eye alone — the starting point for an accurate match.
Recipe Prediction
Color-matching software predicts a dye recipe — the specific combination and proportion of dyes needed — by comparing the target’s spectral data against a database of known dye behavior and past recipes.
Small-Batch Trial Dyeing
The predicted recipe is dyed onto a small swatch under lab conditions — the same fiber and process the bulk order will use, just at a fraction of the scale.
Standardized Light Booth Comparison
The dyed swatch is compared to the target under a light booth cycling through multiple standardized light sources — not just under one office light or a phone screen, which is how mismatches slip through.
Why “Metamerism” Is the Hidden Trap
What Is Metamerism?
Metamerism is when two colors appear to match under one light source but reveal a visible difference under another — for example, a perfect match in daylight that looks slightly greenish under fluorescent store lighting. Because garments are seen under many different lighting conditions between the factory, the warehouse, and the retail floor, a lab dip approved under only one light source can still fail in the real world. That’s why every lab dip we approve is checked across multiple standard illuminants — D65 daylight, TL84 store light, and CWF warm white — before it’s signed off.
