How We Control Shrinkage in Knitted Fabrics

A knitted garment that arrives true to size and then shrinks two sizes after the first wash isn’t bad luck — it’s a variable that went uncontrolled somewhere earlier in the process. Shrinkage in knitwear is predictable and manageable, but only if it’s controlled at the right stages: knitting, wet processing, and finishing.
Here’s how shrinkage actually happens in knitted fabric, and exactly what we do at each stage to keep it inside a tight, tested tolerance before a single garment is cut.
Why Shrinkage Happens in Knits
Knitted fabric is under tension the entire time it’s being formed. Loops are pulled and stretched as they’re knitted, dyed, and rolled — and every one of those stages leaves stored tension in the fabric that wants to relax back out. Shrinkage is really just that stored tension releasing, in one of two ways.
Relaxation Shrinkage
Happens almost immediately once the fabric is off the machine and no longer under knitting tension. If the fabric is cut and sewn before it’s been allowed to relax, the garment will keep shrinking well after it leaves the factory.
Residual (Progressive) Shrinkage
The shrinkage that still occurs during the customer’s first few washes, caused by fiber swelling and the remaining stitch structure settling into its natural resting state. This is what standardized wash tests are designed to measure and predict.
The Three Stages We Control
Knitting: Stitch Length & Tension Calibration
Stitch length (the amount of yarn fed into each loop) is set and monitored precisely for every fabric construction. A stitch length that’s too tight locks in excess tension that later releases as shrinkage — so we calibrate and log stitch length per batch, not just per style.
Relaxation & Mechanical Compacting
After dyeing, fabric is given a proper relaxation dwell time before it’s compacted — mechanically pre-shrunk under controlled heat, moisture, and pressure so most of the shrinkage the fabric would otherwise do in a customer’s washing machine happens on our finishing line instead.
Pre-Production Wash Testing
Before bulk cutting begins, a sample from every approved fabric lot goes through a standardized wash test (following methods like AATCC 135 or ISO 6330) to confirm shrinkage falls within tolerance — so any issue is caught on a swatch, not on ten thousand finished garments.

Different knit structures relax and shrink differently, so we hold each fabric type to a tolerance appropriate to its construction rather than a single blanket number.
